Educations Role in Curbing Social Violence

Can we blame anyone for growing menace of violence in the society which makes us antsy souls on survival mode on Earth.More and more intolerance and vagabond ism.
Children and women are the new entrants to michievers club. Not that they were blithe spirits earlier.
More so social upheaval in the society shows that India is prone to sudden disturbances and social chaos which is against the demographic dividend India has.
What is the root cause of all this?
I think it is the failure of the family and the education system of India. A educated person shall not indulge in violence is no longer the axiom we live by. Students involve in malpractices in Examinations which is the first hand unethical experience they get in life. Teenage sex leads them to trivial happiness and immorality.
By the tim ethey are in college instead of being proud collegians they resemble ruffians. Not the least I want to sound like a pessimist, but if you read a newspaper the gory and bizarre crimes which come to the fore are not only deplorable but make you agnostic.
So here lies the task of the Educational Institutions to step in and complete the task of character reformation of the society. Education can be imparted by model behaviors celebrated rather than singing glory to the bad, the badder and the baddest. Here the role of primary education is the most important as most character formation happens during this phase.
Education Boards should take cognizance of the badness in the society and proactively take up imparting Gandhian values and spiritualism actively in the curriculum.
WE all should take a oath that we will further democratic values, secularism, tolerance and harmony in the society.

Technology Aided Learning ; Importance and Trends

CCE Curriculum of CBSE

Continuous Comprehensive Evaluation or CCE was introduced by CBSE in 2010 in KV's . Its a total philosophy in itself. Example's galore in the real world where those who excelled at school or college level ( Up To PG ) with good grades are seen to fall out of the race or fail miserably when they go for job. It simply means that the education system is not geared towards success but towards failure. It also show the theoretical and reality gap in the world, where text book knowledge is not enough to get you success offshore.

So taking all this into consideration. The system of education needs to gear the students for success. For that it is imperative to create a system which goes beyond academics and teach life skills to students and other non scholastic skills to students. Its not a very complicated system, but requires leadership skills in teachers to create further leaders at all levels in the society.

Students should develop qualities such as brotherhood, amity, tolerance, secularism, non alignment, non group ism, spiritualism etc. They should be life ready and not just some one with a certificate.

So they should be geared to deliver the goods. They should have emotional intelligence , tact, friendliness, adaptability, sociability, amity, amicability.

They should be at peace with themselves first. Then they can make peace with the world and others in society.

They should show leadership skills and affiliation towards humanity and their country.
Honesty , integrity and hard work are other things which they can look to develop.

Crime and Punishment

Any crime needs to be punished is a well known doctrine of any civil society.

To maintain civility uncivil methods have to be adopted from time to time. That is where the judiciary and law enforcement agencies step in.

Same is true with students. Corporeal punishment is banished from schools, but there is a rise in bizarre violent crimes hitherto unheard of from the juvenile community.

A rise in crime, suicides, Divorces and Office violence shows nothing but growing conflict within the society.

In the backdrop of the above it becomes imperative to use some form of punishment at school level maybe not corporeal.

Healthy punishments could be used to deter bad behavior of students.

Also other ways of inculcating good habits in students like sports and cultural activities can be taken up.

Education is the first line of defense of the nation towards progress.

Students should be made to pursue hobbies and involve them in creative projects to harness their energy and channelize towards their own good and the good of the society as a whole.

The only way to reduce violence is harmony in the society. Many schools celebrate grand parents day and other cultural events to involve the parents of the student and free them from the worldly tensions which create gateways of stress and conflict.

Also students seldom only know good things and show real cruel behavior. Hence the students should be exhorted towards practice and preaching good behavior and not just preaching the good behavior. This way the knowing doing gap of the students can be reduced.

Creative punishment can be used with students. For eg. if a student litters , instead of beating or reprimanding the students, the students could be asked to take part in a shram daan, school cleaning program.

Also to make them understand about importance of environment cleanliness, they could be involved in community cleaning programs to inculcate the discipline with in them.

Democracy, Student Empowerment and Equity

Gone are the days of Stick

Today even toddlers of primary school may dissent autocracy. So the best way out and more effective way is only to treat the students with equanimity.

With the coming of democratization in Education we see students being handed over more and more power to lead the way they want the education process to be delivered to them. You may see them asking for various methodologies to be followed to make learning easier for them.

Empowerment is good and for the better of the system as a whole and is likely to increase the quality of the manpower churned in an economy. But it is a double edged sword.

Empowerment to students should in no way dis empower the faculty and the educationists. This way sure it can lead to a power struggle between the two and result in erosion of the goals for which the democratization and empowerment process itself has been initiated in the first place.

Empowered student can more often give voice to their opinion about the delivery systems in education and the difficulties which they face in the same. This can lead to over all improvement in the delivery and better satisfaction level and grades for the students.

Democracy and Empowerment interventions which can be used in Education setting:

1. Student leaders can be elected to act as interface and interlocutors between the faculty, management and student groups.

2. Steps may be taken to create harmony between the stakeholders by conducting various group initiatives like educational tours and outings.

3. Students should be able to suggest the pace of teaching and some hold on the curriculum to be expanded and shrinked according to the student preferences and capabilities.

4. Students should be provided with guidance to learn beyond the textbook by providing tools of education like internet, educational CD/s DVD's, Web site subscriptions, Practical Project kits, Industry internships.

5. Regular feed back should be taken from the students which can be anonymous and also direct bu using avenues like suggestion boxes.

Ethics in Education

Once there was a teacher named Mohan Das.

He was a Secondary Teacher in a School. The school taught moral values to the students.
But the students came from various backgrounds as per the Govt. policy. Poor students were given free education and admission to the school.

There were various dysfunctional habits in the behavior of the students. These ranged from using bad language, to cheating in the Examination.

Every day morning in the School Assembly the students would talk about the great people , their philosophy and what is right and wrong.

But in real life they never displayed the right behavior, leave alone the right path.
Mohan Das thought, I am paid by the school to educate these children, but is this the real education.

He thought I deserve my salary only when I reform these students and create honorable citizens of the society.

So he explained to the students. He said education is cosmetic until it changes the students behavior for good. Students you talk about good things, you may be aware of difference between the good and the bad, but do you practice the good.

He explained to the students that when you cheat in the Exam calling it teamwork, you are doing bad to the Humanity.

Think when you become a nurse and have not learn your lessons well, you may kill a person due to your ignorance. If you become a soldier and not learn how to use a bomb, it may explode in your own territory.

When you cheat in the Exam you fore go learning.
A person who has integrity and fail in the Exam is better than a person who copies and passes in the Exam.

Failures are nothing but stepping stones to success.

It is the moral obligation of every teacher to be a leader in right path.
A teacher is role model to the students and has a higher Moral Responsibility than even the President of a country.
